Case Study: Developing the Rate.am Exchange Rate Aggregator and Trading Platform

Rate Trading is an Armenian financial ecosystem that includes Rate.am, a portal for monitoring exchange rates, and Rate.Trading, a currency trading platform where transactions are executed in partnership with IDBank. Rate.am collects rates from banks, exchange offices, credit organizations and the Central Bank, helping users quickly find the best offer. For individuals, it is a way to exchange currency nearby at a good rate; for accountants and CFOs, it is a daily market monitoring tool.

Challenges

The goal was not just a rate directory, but a scalable fintech platform for web and smartphone: with a large volume of constantly updated data, clear comparison of offers and a separate line of digital currency operations.

The audience includes people exchanging currency, entrepreneurs, accountants and CFOs, crypto investors, as well as banks and exchange offices that publish their own rates.

Solution

Dense tables that are easy to read. Separate sections for banks, exchange offices, credit organizations and the Central Bank; toggles for cash and non-cash rates, direct and cross rates; update time and number of branches. An algorithm automatically highlights the best buy and sell rates.
Data collection and validation. Rates arrive automatically via parsers and manually from partners, go through normalization and freshness checks, and fallback logic covers cases when a source is unavailable.
Crypto hub and converter. Quotes for BTC, ETH, BNB, USDC, XRP, SOL, TRX and other assets in drams and dollars, with tabs for the Binance, Bybit, Coinbase and Crypto.com exchanges. The converter instantly recalculates the amount based on the selected organization and transaction type.
Geosearch and Central Bank archive. Branches and exchange offices on a map or in a list, with filters by organization, region, city and "open now" status. The archive of official rates is built as a calendar matrix by year, month and day.
Partner portal and Rate.Trading. A secure login through which exchange offices update their own rates, plus a separate trading section with currency pairs, a live buy/sell ticker and IDBank integration.

Technical details

Platform: web built with React, Next.js and TypeScript, an iOS and Android app built with React Native, REST API, parsers and a task scheduler, caching, monitoring and logging.
