What Django gives you from day one
Django is called a "batteries included" framework: a large share of standard functionality doesn't have to be written from scratch. The core package includes:
- an admin panel generated automatically from the data structure, so you can work with records without building a separate interface;
- database access through models and migrations, so the structure can be changed carefully, with a history of changes;
- users, groups and permissions down to individual actions;
- forms with input validation, page templates and interface translations;
- built-in protection against common attacks: cross-site request forgery, script injection and SQL injection.
All of this is well documented and proven in thousands of projects, so development starts from a reliable foundation rather than from zero.
Django advantages
- A fast path to a working system. Thanks to the admin panel, the first working versions appear early and you can test the logic on your own data.
- Organized code. Django enforces a clear project structure, so new developers get up to speed quickly.
- Security focus. Secure settings are on by default, and security updates are released regularly.
- Access to the entire Python ecosystem. Analytics, document processing and work with language models can be added using ready-made Python libraries.
- Predictable support. Django has long-term support releases, so upgrades can be planned in advance.
Django limitations
- Monolithic approach. Django works best as one large system. If the product is designed from the start as a set of small independent services, the framework may be too heavy.
- The admin panel isn't a customer interface. It works well for staff, but customers and partners need a separate, custom-designed interface.
- Real-time isn't its strongest suit. Chats and live updates are possible, but they require extra components and experience.
- It needs its own server. A Django project usually won't run on basic shared hosting built for PHP sites, so server setup and maintenance have to be planned for.
When to choose something else
If your team or existing infrastructure leans toward PHP, similar tasks are handled well by Laravel; the two frameworks are very similar in approach. If you only need a small, fast API without an admin panel, the lighter FastAPI on the same Python stack is simpler. And for a brochure site or a blog, a custom framework-based system is overkill altogether.
Django with React, Vue or Wagtail
Django can be used in different ways. In the classic setup it renders pages itself, which is simple and good for search engines. In modern products Django often works as an API, while the interface is built separately in React or Vue: this makes it easier to build complex, dynamic screens and serve a mobile app at the same time.
For content-heavy sites where marketers need a convenient page editor, Wagtail is a good fit: a content management system built on Django. It lets you combine flexible pages and complex logic in one project.
New project or improving an existing one
A new project starts with the data model and roles. Mistakes at this stage are the most expensive, because every later feature depends on the database structure. Next comes the admin panel for your team, then user-facing interfaces and integrations.
An existing project is audited first: Django and Python versions, third-party packages and their condition, migrations, tests and security settings. Projects often get stuck on an old version because one of the packages stopped being maintained. In that case we find a replacement or bring the needed code into the project.
Integrations and background tasks
Django web systems typically exchange data with CRM and accounting software, payment providers, email marketing platforms and shipping carriers. Heavy operations such as large file imports, PDF generation and email campaigns are moved to background tasks with Celery, so users don't wait for the page to load.
If your idea is a product where users book, calculate or order something on a subscription, take a look at our online services page as well: it covers the product type itself rather than the technology.
Speed and security
When a Django project is slow, the cause is almost always the database: a page makes hundreds of small queries instead of a few well-designed ones. We find these spots with profiling tools, rewrite queries, add indexes and cache data that rarely changes.
On security, Django provides a solid foundation, but it's easy to undermine with misconfiguration. Before launch we check:
- that debug mode is off and secret keys aren't stored in the code;
- that permissions are checked on every action, not just by hiding buttons in the interface;
- that user-uploaded files can't be executed on the server;
- that database backups run automatically and can actually be restored.
What affects cost
- Number of roles and processes: who works in the system and how many scenarios need to be built.
- Interface: whether a customized admin panel is enough or a separate custom-designed interface is needed.
- Integrations: the number of external systems and how they provide data.
- Speed and data volume requirements: caching, queues, search, multiple servers.
- Code condition for an existing project: Django version, tests, outdated packages.
We break the estimate into stages, so you can see what each includes and what can be postponed.
FAQ
Is Django suitable for large projects? Yes. Large services with millions of users run on it. What matters is designing the database, caching and background tasks properly.
Can the Django admin panel be used as a CRM? For an internal team, often yes, with some customization. For customers and partners, a separate interface is better.
Our project runs on an old Django version. Should we upgrade? Yes, because unsupported versions don't receive security fixes. We upgrade step by step, version by version, verifying everything with tests.
Can another team maintain our project later? Yes. Django has a standard structure, and we hand over the code, access credentials and documentation of key decisions. You're not locked in to us.
Will a Django site be indexed well? Yes, if pages are rendered on the server, or if server-side rendering is set up for a separate frontend.
Why Promodex
At Promodex, the same people work on a Django project from data model design to launch: our own developers and designers, with no parts of the work handed off to third-party contractors. We have 750+ projects since 2015 and 50+ awards behind us. We explain every decision transparently, and after launch we provide support, upgrades and ongoing development.
