What OpenCart does out of the box
Once installed, OpenCart is already a working store. It includes:
- a catalog with categories, attributes, product options (size, color) and filters;
- cart, checkout, discounts, coupons and gift certificates;
- multiple languages and currencies, plus several stores from one admin panel (Multistore);
- order statuses, customer emails and manager roles;
- basic sales and product reports.
Everything else, such as payment gateways, shipping carriers, accounting system sync and better filters, is added with modules. The choice of modules and the quality of customization have the biggest impact on how reliably your store runs.
OpenCart advantages
- No subscription fees. The platform is free; you only pay for hosting, modules and development work.
- You own all the code. The store can be moved to another host or another team, and any logic can be changed.
- Lots of ready-made modules. Common tasks (payments, shipping, filters, imports) have off-the-shelf solutions, which lowers launch costs.
- Light on server resources. A store with several thousand products runs fine on standard hosting.
- Easy for managers. The admin panel is intuitive without training: adding a product, changing a price or processing an order is simple.
Limitations to know in advance
- Module quality varies. Third-party modules often conflict with each other, slow the site down or contain vulnerabilities. Every module should be vetted before installation.
- Version upgrades are complex. Moving from OpenCart 2 or 3 to OpenCart 4 is essentially a store migration: the theme and some modules will need to be rebuilt.
- Large catalogs need optimization. With tens of thousands of products, pages load slowly unless the database, cache and filters are tuned.
- Complex business logic means custom development. Customer-specific wholesale pricing, multiple warehouses and product configurators aren't included in the core version.
When another platform is a better choice
OpenCart isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. We recommend a different solution if:
- you need to launch fast without your own server or in-house developers, and you sell across multiple countries: take a look at Shopify;
- the site is primarily content (a blog or media) and the store is an add-on section: WordPress with WooCommerce is more convenient;
- the project involves complex logic, many sellers or high traffic: custom development, for example on Laravel, is more reliable.
On our first call, we'll tell you honestly whether OpenCart is right for your goals.
OpenCart 3 or OpenCart 4
Many stores currently run on OpenCart 3. This version has the largest selection of proven modules and themes, so for a new store it's often the most practical choice.
OpenCart 4 is newer, but some popular modules haven't been rewritten for it yet. It's the right choice if all the modules you need already exist for version 4, or if the functionality will be custom-built anyway. If your store runs on an older version, we first assess whether upgrading or carefully maintaining the current version makes more sense.
New store or improving an existing one
A new store starts with the catalog structure and the buying journey: how people find a product, compare, choose shipping and pay. Then come design, theme development, module setup, product import and testing every scenario before launch.
An existing store gets a review first: which version, which modules are installed, whether the core was modified and where the bottlenecks are. Many issues can be solved without development: removing a conflicting module, configuring the cache or updating PHP. We add new features through OCMOD so the store can be updated without losing customizations.
Integrations: CRM, accounting, payments, shipping
A store rarely operates on its own. The integrations we set up most often:
- a CRM for order processing (HubSpot, Salesforce and others);
- QuickBooks or another accounting system to sync products, prices and inventory;
- payments via Stripe and PayPal;
- UPS, FedEx and USPS with shipping options selected at checkout;
- product feeds to Amazon and Google Merchant Center;
- scheduled imports of supplier price lists.

OpenCart store speed and SEO
Search engines and shoppers alike dislike slow sites. In OpenCart, speed is most often lost to heavy modules, unoptimized images and database queries in filters. We find these bottlenecks and fix them rather than just installing yet another "speed-up" module.
For SEO, we set up clean URLs, titles and descriptions for categories and products, and remove duplicate pages generated by filters and sorting.
What affects cost and timeline
- Design: a ready-made theme with customizations or a custom design built around your brand.
- Catalog: the number of products, attributes and variants, and where and how often data is updated.
- Integrations: how many external systems need to be connected and whether they have a ready-made API.
- Custom logic: wholesale pricing, customer accounts, product configurators, multiple warehouses.
- Condition of an existing store: for improvements, the version, number of modules and core modifications.

Frequently asked questions
Can you improve a store built by another team? Yes. We start with an audit of the code and modules to understand what can be safely changed and what's better rebuilt.
Do I need to upgrade to OpenCart 4? Not always. If your store runs reliably and the modules you need exist for your current version, it's often more cost-effective to maintain it and keep PHP and modules updated.
Can OpenCart handle a large catalog? Yes, but tens of thousands of products require database, cache and filter optimization. Without it, the store will be slow.
Who will add products to the store? We can set up imports from a spreadsheet, a supplier price list or your accounting system. Manual product entry can also be discussed separately.
What happens after launch? We can take your store on for technical support: updates, bug fixes and new features as your business grows.
